Your Guide to Fabrics for Suits
When you go to have a bespoke suit made, you will be able to customize your suit by selecting from a variety of different fabrics. The choices can get a little overwhelming, and it would be helpful to have an idea of what you want when you visit a tailor. This will be your guide to all the different suit fabric options you will have when designing your bespoke suit.
Wool, or Worsted Fabric

Now, I know what you're thinking: isn't wool the scratchy fabric your grandmother made last year's Christmas sweater from?
That scratchy stuff is called wooled fabric. It is fleece cut from a sheep and then spun into fabric. When we're talking about suits, we're talking about something call worsted fabric.
Worsted fabric is combed before it is spun. This creates a much smother fabric, and is the wool used in most tailor shops when making suits.
You can get quite a variety of different suit patterns from wool fabrics depending on how you weave it. Examples include check, pinstripe, plaid, houndstooth and herringbone patterns. The most common pattern for blazers are hopsacks.

There are other wool hybrid fabrics that are also popular with suits, such as flannel, a very soft wool fabric, and tweed.
Luxury Fibers

Many tailors offer a small range of luxury fibres, such as cashmere, silk, and mohair. These soft and warm fabrics usually take a few years to make and require a great deal of craftsmanship to weave into a suit, which is why they can be expensive.

The fabrics we use from Cerruti and Zegna would fall into this category.
Cotton
And now we arrive at more plant based fabrics. Cotton is used in a lot of casual suits. It's breathable, flexible, and a lot cheaper than wool, linen, or luxury fabrics, but creases much more easily.

Linen
Linen is a fabric made from flax plants. It's breathable, but also susceptible to wrinkles. You might like the used look that this creates, but it is something to be aware of when selecting the fabric for your bespoke suit.
