For those who know nothing about formal wear for men, it would helpful to have guide to the basics of what you need to know about formal wear. This article will explain what formal wear is and what to wear to achieve a formal look.
What is Considered Formal Wear?
Formal wear, at least in the west, is what you would wear to events such as weddings, certain formal parties, funerals, dinners and balls. For men, formal clothing includes trousers, a dress shirt (and maybe a waistcoat or vest), a suit or a tuxedo jacket, some form of neckwear suit accessory, and dress shoes.
What are Suit Accessories?
Suit accessories are fashion accessories that men wear with a suit to vary the textures and colors of your outfit. The most come suit accessories are neckties. Neckties are worn across a wide range of dress codes, from formal wear to business casual.
Less common are bow ties. Men often only wear bow ties for the most formal of formal occasions and with tuxedos.
Pocket square are a little talked about fashion accessories that go well with formal suits. Men have as many different ways of folding and wearing a pocket square as there are pocket squares.
Silk scarves can also be worn by men as a suit accessories, but you will want to read the room before wearing one to a formal event. Silk scarves will appropriate certain events, but not all.
What Colours Should You Wear and Not Wear for a Formal Occasion?
While men can be playful with the fashion accessories they wear and even with the lining of their suit jackets, you don't want to stick out too much because of color choice. The goal of a formal dress code is so that there is a level of uniformity among guests. Avoid dressing all in black or all in red. You should also avoid sparkly, metallic colours like gold. Usually, a combination of a dark jacket and light shirt works best, like a navy blue or charcoal black suit with a white dress shirt.
